TWENTY-TWO

Sierra

The trust Roman showed by giving me full access to his phone shocks me enough that I don’t realize what I tap on until the listing comes up in perfect color on his six-inch screen.

Navigating backward, I skim-read the text thread to understand why he’d give me a link to the sale of my damn residence.

He said he wants to goddamn buy it. I never knew he was looking.

I spend the twenty minutes it takes for Madame to take his measurements sweating it out, heart palpitating with such ferocity that I’m sure I’m about to pass out twice.

He had a plan in giving me his phone, and if there’s anything I’ve learned in the short time we’ve known each other, it’s that everything occurs for his sole benefit.

Nobody else.

In Roman’s world, he is the fucking sun, moon, and stars. No-one else matters.

“..suit ready in time for you, darling.” Madame places a hand dotingly to Roman’s cheek like a sweet little granny.

She’s equally as blind to his vile character.

He places a chaste kiss to her cheek, thanking her again for fitting us in at such short notice.

And then clicks his goddamn fingers for me to follow.

I stand yet refuse to move from my position before the sofa. My stomach knots hard enough that I’m confident I’d vomit if I’d eaten more than dry cereal this morning.

“Why are you standing there?” he barks, ignoring the shocked look from Madame Lelong. “We have issues to attend to.”

“Thank you, Madame.” I smile at the petite woman and follow my goddamn master from the boutique.

He sets a quick pace out to the Rover, not bothering to hold the door for me as we exit onto the street.

“Are you going to tell me what the hell this was about?” I ask, words shaking as I thrust Roman’s phone toward him.

“I should ask you that.” The anger in his eyes disarms me, and I juggle with my purse before it falls to the ground. “Foreclosure?”

“That’s none of your business.”

“When?” he growls. “When did it foreclose? Before or after you met me?”

“What do you suggest?” I clutch my bag to my chest, seeking any protection I can get at this moment.

“Seems a little suspicious that your house forecloses, and you accept my proposal, don’t you think?”

Shit. “What else am I supposed to get out of this?” I holler. “You get a massive inheritance paid out, and I get what? A few thousand dollars to save my investment. Is that so bad?”

“You use me!” The muscles in his neck cord, brow pinched as he yells. “You said you’re not interested in my money, but that’s a lie. Isn’t it?”

“No.” I don’t know how to explain this to him, but if it weren’t for his crazy proposal, I would have found another way.

I always do.

“It’s not just about the money.”

“But you were counting on me to bail you out.” He shakes his head, pacing between the Range Rover and me. “You’re no different than Lindy.”

“That’s not fair.” I drop my arms to my sides and stride to the hood of his car to dump my purse.
